Welcome to the website of the International Harlingen Seaport. Congress. The Friese Havendagen (Frisian Harbour Days) will take place on 6, 7 and 8 June 2008 in Harlingen. This event is organized every four years in order to focus national and international attention on Harlingen - the only seaport of the Dutch province of Fryslân - by means of a wide range of events with a nautical, cultural and economic character. Our congress is the prologue to all activities and includes the official opening ceremony as well.
The theme of this year’s edition of the Friese Havendagen is ‘Scandinavia and the Baltic States’, which will be echoed in all activities. The theme is important for our congress as in Seaport Harlingen the transport of goods to and from this region and its hinterland is increasing considerably. You might say that history is repeating itself. A few centuries ago our ancestors had flourishing relationships with Scandinavia and the countries by the Baltic Sea. Wars and political developments made an end to these activities in the former century. Thanks to the fall of the communism and the expansion of the European Union, nowadays there are a lot of positive economic developments again.
You will find on this website a full programme survey under the button ‘Content’. You will see that the programme takes place in the afternoon and the evening of Thursday 5 June. The two main issues of the programme are ‘Transport, logistics, and harbour developments’ and ‘Stimulating and promoting international trade with Scandinavia and the Baltic States’. When we made up the programme, we tried to find a balance between the three components ‘listening, talking and meeting’. Our speakers, workshop leaders, and members of the discussion panel all know how to captivate you during their transfer of knowledge and dialogue. Moreover there will be plenty of time to meet each other and make new business contacts.
The congress is intended for anybody who has to do with international harbour developments. This might be anything between infrastructure and transport. The congress is also intended for anybody who has been trading or wants to trade with Scandinavia and the Baltic States. And of course we will be happy to see managers from various Dutch or foreign areas who are setting up the conditions for promoting international economic activities.
To keep in style the congress will take place in a newer part of Harlingen Industrial Port on board the ms River Dream, a very suitable ship for these kind of programmes.
Further on this website you will find all information to announce your presence and to register yourself. We look forward to welcoming you as our guest on Thursday 5 June and are happy to see you in the beautiful seaport town of Harlingen in the North of the Netherlands.
